First Post!

Why Rainbow Dash is my Favorite Pony

Hello everyone! I'm TV Trixie and hopefully I'll be posting here around three or four times a week, maybe more if this takes off. Since today is Saturday and there's a pony episode on, I thought I'd take a few minutes to tell everypony why Rainbow Dash is my favorite. The reasons are deeper than the normal "because she's 20% cooler!" and "because she's awesome!" I'm part of a brony facebook group, and someone asked if anyone had disliked their favorite pony at first and then it grew on them. Well, one thing led to another and I ended up writing disorganized paragraphs on why Rainbow Dash was my favorite and countering someone else's comment about how she was worst pony. So I thought I would put why she's best pony in a more organized fashion. I'm going to start by saying why I like her and then move to countering common arguments against her.

In case you are new to the show or just forgot, Rainbow Dash represents the element of loyalty. This element, in particular, speaks to me on a personal level. I was bullied from preschool until college, and I only had one or two friends at a time to stand up for me. However, for those one or two friends that I really cared about, I was incredibly loyal, and expected the same thing in return. Sometimes it was returned, sometimes it wasn't, but that's another topic entirely. When I start enjoying a television show or movie and become a part of the fandom, I continue watching the show until the very last episode, and even then, I am an active part of the fandom. Rainbow Dash is the same way. She goes insane over every Daring Do book that comes out and has never stopped dreaming of joining the Wonderbolts. Loyalty defines who I am, and I honestly think Rainbow Dash represents her element brilliantly. She's usually the first pony to help with something, and is always the first to confront the problem. I know there are people out there who don't think so, and I will address those arguments later in this post.

Now, just because I said that the reasons I like her go deeper than just because she's awesome, I do have to say that she really is awesome. Her flying ability is unsurpassed. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the Wonderbolts don't even match her flying ability. She is the most colorful out of all the ponies, and I'd go so far as to say the best looking, too. Now obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but as a female, I admire her looks more than Rarity's. Rainbow Dash is tomboyish and really doesn't care, yet she is naturally beautiful, unlike Rarity, who combs her hair 100 times per day and puts on makeup in order to look good. Even her cutie mark is awesome. I mean, who wouldn't want a tri-colored lightning bolt for their cutie mark?

Now onto the counterargument part of the blog...

I can't stand her brashness and arrogance!

She does, admittedly, portray herself as arrogant, like nothing could waver her self-confidence. However, I'm going to cite Sonic Rainboom on this one. She was really confident in the beginning of the episode, doing her normal thing, even chastising Fluttershy for not being a good cheering section. However, she was very nervous once she flew up to Cloudsdale for the Young Flier's competition, and once Rarity joined, she almost didn't go onstage. Good thing she saw Rarity falling and the Wonderbolts going after her. Her element kicked in and she performed a Sonic Rainboom in order to catch up, thus winning the competition. In summary, Rainbow isn't as confident as she appears. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that she's putting up an image when she does that. She doesn't want anypony to doubt her abilities like she does. She wants to get into the Wonderbolts, she'll brag about her abilities all day long, but at the end of the day, I'm pretty sure Rainbow Dash doubts herself more than you might think. Does this mean she has low self-esteem? Not necessarily. But I think she has much less than the other ponies think she does.

Also, I'm going to address the brashness by saying it's part of her element. Her element is unwavering, undying loyalty. As such, if she sees that something is holding you back, she is going to address it. Now, as I mentioned before, she has an image to maintain, so it may not be in the best of ways, but usually it's with your self interest in mind. Even when she gets frustrated with her friends, like in Dragonshy, she did believe that Fluttershy could have more courage, so she tried to encourage her to pony up, she just didn't do it lightly. Rainbow Dash is much less brash with Scootaloo, and I think it's these times that we see her personality come out the most. She really does care, she just doesn't show it all the time, because that's the image she puts up.

She's so competitive! It gets in the way of everything!

Yeah she's competitive! The one thing she has that the other ponies don't is her speed and agility. Honestly, her competitiveness probably stems from the fact that she actually has lower-than-you-think self-esteem. She is competitive in order to prove to herself that she is as awesome as she says she is. However, it doesn't normally get in the way of anything. The one time it does (fall weather friends) she learns her lesson. Yeah, she and Applejack still compete all the time, but it's a part of their bond and it's not destructive. In addition, if she wants to get into the Wonderbolts, she has to be competitive. The competition is stiff, and the only way she's going to achieve her dream is by competing herself.

She's mean though! She pranks everypony!

Yeah, I can't argue with that second part. She is a real prankster. However, I don't think it's done in a mean spirit. I think it's part of how she shows she cares. Have you ever had a friend that, the more they got to know you and the more they cared about you, the more they teased you? It's the same thing, she pranks her close friends. Now, obviously she goes a little far sometimes, such as in Luna Eclipsed, but Griffon the Brush-Off proves that she obviously does it with good intentions.

One last reason I like Rainbow Dash before we wrap up. Her relationship with Scootaloo. Scootaloo looks up to her in a big way, and so many ponies would find that weird or annoying, but Rainbow just takes it all in stride and says she'll be her big sister. That is very admirable of her. There are many other minor reasons why I like Rainbow Dash, such as her love of reading, or how she sometimes slips up and you see the caring pony underneath, but I think I'll leave it at that. What are some of your reasons for liking your favorite pony? Post in the comments!
